The College English Department is divided into the first, second and third teaching divisions, which are responsible for the undergraduate teaching of the main campus, the new campus and the Xiangya Medical College campus respectively. Course objectives:
1) College English Basic courses: to cultivate students' basic language skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation and other aspects, aiming to consolidate students' English language knowledge system, cultivate and improve students' English language application ability and communication ability.
2) Language skills courses: the continuation of basic English courses, aimed at improving students' practical language communication and application ability.
3) Cultural Quality elective courses: Integrate students' English learning and cultural quality training process, use English as a medium to understand and compare the different characteristics of Chinese and Western cultures, absorb the essence, and improve humanistic quality.
4) Application-oriented elective courses: Cultivate students' ability of language analysis and application at a higher level, develop students' ability of logical reasoning, judgment and analysis of language, and improve their ability of writing and translating academic papers.
5) Specialized elective courses in advanced stage: Train students to use English as the language medium to learn interdisciplinary professional knowledge and theories, laying a good foundation for further professional study in the future and integrating with international academic exchanges.
As one of the first pilot schools of the Ministry of Education and a demonstration project school of College English teaching reform, our school has carried out a series of reform research and practice in college English teaching in the past five years, and has achieved remarkable results.
First, put forward a new concept of foreign language education. In combination with the university's development plan and the new undergraduate training program, we put forward the concept and framework of college foreign language education, that is, integrate teaching resources from all aspects of the university, optimize multidimensional foreign language education and learning environment by reforming the college English curriculum system, classroom teaching content and teaching methods, and create a good foreign language learning atmosphere for students. Comprehensively improve students' practical application of foreign language skills, and build a platform for learning professional courses and participating in international academic exchanges.
Second, establish a three-level curriculum teaching structure system of "Basic English + Advanced English + Professional English". This curriculum system framework is based on the "Requirements for College English Course Teaching" of the Ministry of Education, combined with the large number of students in our school and the characteristics of different starting points and the establishment of the basic stage, advanced stage and professional stage of foreign language talent training model, which conforms to the language needs and personalized development of students, and is conducive to the cultivation of students' comprehensive English application ability.
Basic English courses for college English 1-4, the implementation of the "2+2+X" course teaching mode, that is, "2 hours of multimedia classroom comprehensive classroom teaching" plus "2 hours of digital language room small class audio-visual teaching" and "X hours of after-school students online independent learning, teachers online tutoring and Q&A".
Advanced English courses are divided into three categories: language skills, language application and language culture, focusing on cultivating students' practical language application ability and cultural accomplishment. At present, there are 12 weekend humanities quality courses and 14 English extension series elective courses in the fourth semester.
Professional English courses provide a platform for students to learn professional knowledge in English, engage in academic research and exchange, and now offer professional courses of Medical English, Information Technology English, Business English, and Scientific English, among which Medical English is an excellent course of Central South University in 2009.
Third, build a systematic teaching evaluation system to ensure the improvement of teaching quality. It is an important feature of college English teaching in our university to insist on teaching evaluation and guarantee the teaching quality of college English courses. In recent years, our teaching evaluation is mainly through: (1) building a formative teaching evaluation system, adhering to the system of mid-term examination and regular teaching inspection, organizing open course teaching and teaching selection and guidance; (2) The school teaching quality control system, including the inspection of school inspectors, regular mid-term teaching inspection, etc.; (3) Improve the final assessment model, reform the examination method in the comprehensive evaluation, and introduce the oral test.
In the teaching inspection organized by the academic affairs Office of the school, the excellent rate of the course attendance evaluation has remained above 93% for three consecutive years; The classroom teaching effect evaluation is excellent, and the final evaluation is excellent year after year.
Fourth, strengthen the construction of teaching environment and expand the time and space of college English classroom teaching. The "Central South University English Learning Online Website" has been established to introduce excellent network language teaching resources as online learning courses, improve and update them, and form five platforms, including online courses, academic research, Internet surfing, teacher-student interaction and examination world, to provide students with rich language learning resources and create a good communication atmosphere.
The university has invested more than 80 million yuan to build a new foreign language network teaching building, including a dedicated area of nearly 10,000 square meters for college English experimental teaching, with 36 digital voice laboratories (more than 1,400 seats) and 3 dedicated classrooms (400 seats) for independent learning center, which can accommodate 1,800 people to study or take English online exams at the same time. A satellite viewing system has been built so that students can watch foreign language programs in all foreign language classrooms. The campus network is used to open a broadband network learning channel covering all campuses and student dormitories; Students can listen to English listening lessons on FM radio at any place on campus.
Fifth, pay attention to the combination of classroom teaching and extracurricular activities to create a foreign language cultural atmosphere for students. Guided the English Club of Central South University, the Top Ten Students' English Culture Club in Hunan Province, to carry out a series of campus English cultural activities, including English corner, short play competition, speech contest, reading and vocabulary contest, etc., in spare time, so as to create a good foreign language cultural atmosphere and language use environment.
Sixth, reform methods to improve teaching quality and effect. Pay attention to the leading role of front-line teachers and the main role of students in classroom teaching. The provincial project "Research on the Practice of Bidirectional Reflection and Dynamic Complementarity in College English" presided over by Professor Peng Jinding, the course leader, won the first prize of Hunan Provincial Teaching Reform Achievement. Since 2004, the passing rate of College English Test Band 4 has increased steadily.
Seventh, based on teaching, project research to promote teaching improvement. Relying on the discipline advantages of the key disciplines of Hunan Province "Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics" and "English Language and Literature" and "English Language and Literature" doctoral programs and "Curriculum and Teaching Theory" master programs, the work idea of "based on teaching, project research to promote teaching" is proposed, and the teaching reform has achieved remarkable results. In the past five years, college English teachers of our university have undertaken 69 teaching reform and research projects at all levels, including 5 projects of the Ministry of Education, 21 projects at the provincial and ministerial level, 39 projects at the university level, and 4 projects across the board. He has won 11 teaching achievement awards at all levels, 17 scientific research achievement awards, and 57 teaching competitions/guidance awards. He has published 175 papers in important academic journals at home and abroad. He has published 48 books and teaching materials.
